The River Thamesis not as clean asyou might think.   Sewage from our overstretched sewernetwork is polluting the capital’s river, killing fsh and threatening the health of river users.  Following our phase one consultationlast year, we’ve revised our plans for theproposed   Thames Tunnel . Sewage discharge from Holloway Storm Relief sewer into the River Thames.  Ten reasons why London needsthe Thames Tunnel  The River Thames has become an environmental and public health hazard . Sewage regularly overows into the riverfrom London’s Victorian sewerage system. The current network of major sewers, founded 150 years ago, was designed for acity of four million people and is no longerbig enough to meet the needs of modernday London. The city’s population is nowapproaching eight million. In a typical year, the city’s sewers discharge 39 million cubic metres of untreated sewage into the River Thames– enough to ll the Royal Albert Hall 450times.The discharges are the last signicant source of pollution in the tidal RiverThames. Mixed with rainwater, the sewagecontent of the discharges ranges from tento 90 per cent, depending on conditions. This pollution kills sh, damages wildlife and carries pathogens such as hepatitis Aand faecal streptococci, which threatenhuman health. It’s a serious problem – andgetting worse.More frequent and intense storms, especially in summer, are adding to theproblem, as is the loss of permeablesurfaces able to soak up rainfall. As littleas 2mm of rainfall can now trigger asewage discharge. Years of detailed analysis have concludedthat the Thames Tunnel is a timely and cost-eective part of the solution.   Alternative options would cost more, bemore disruptive and would not achieve theenvironmental standards required.British taxpayers would be at risk of havingto fund hefty nes from the EU if the UKis conrmed to be in breach of the UrbanWaste Water Treatment Directive. Other world-leading cities, including Paris,Stockholm, Helsinki and Washington DC,are forging ahead with similar schemes .
