   Date 28, 29 March 1580, 14, 15 April 1580 Location Coggeshall, Essex Themes Illegitimacy, fornication, authority, servant Source Essex Sessions Rolls, Easter 1580, SEAX Q/SR 74/23 Link http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.aspx?ThisRecordsOffSet=9&id=257391 http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.aspx?ThisRecordsOffSet=1&id=257389 Details On 28 March, 1580, the local court proposed: Whereas John Sawnder [Saunders] of Coggeshall is the reputed father of a bastard child begotten in that town on the body of Mary Webbe, servant to the said John that to the ende the same maye with repentance of hur former wycked lyffe putt hyr selfe into sum honeste servyce therefore she shall not have the keeping of the same child but it shall be taken from her and put forth to be nursed and the said John shall pay 16d. weekly to the constables if that parish for the nurshing maintances and apparel of the said child and shall form hence forth discharged the said parish form keeping the said child. On 29 March: ..;the said John Saunder for the said John, who has been before this time called before Sir Thomas Lucas, knight, Edward Suliarde and George Dorrell, esquires, for a cause of advowterie [adultery] and is by them found to be the reputed father of a base-born child begotten on the body of Mary Webbe of Coggeshall aforesaid, and whereas the said justices did set down an order in writing for the keeping of the said child by the said John Saunder, which order he refuses to perform, therefore the said John is bound to appear at the next Quarter Sessions of the Peace and stand to such order as the justices shall determine or to perform the  previous order. On 14/15 April, John agreed to appear at the next General Session, to answer for fathering the child: Recognizance taken of John Saunders of Coggeshall, clothier, handed in  bail to William Saunders of the same, clothier, to appear at the next General Sessions for a bastard child begotten by him on the body of Mary Webbe his late servant.
