It is partly based on research carried outby Morwenna Sullivan, Food Security Advisor and Claire De Menezes, Health andNutrition Advisor.Several members o Action Against Hunger have contributed to and critically commented on this report, including Rebecca Brown, Jean Michel Grand, ChristineKahmann and all other colleagues who have given helpul suggestions to improvethis report - I owe them a great deal. I would also like to thank all my colleagues inthe Action Against Hunger International Network who enabled the Hunger Watch  team to collect inormation. I also wish to express my gratitude to the Action AgainstHunger missions who have actively supported this paper and collected rst handinormation. Alan Martin’s great eort in editing the nal version needs to be men-tioned with great gratitude as this report would not have been possible without hishard work. Hunger Watch would especially like to thank all women around the world, whoshared their experience and their stories or this publication. Action Against Hunger would like to dedicate this report to them.  action against hungerWomen and hunger  women And Hunger Over the last 25 years, Action Against Hunger has worked in many countries in which women have aced extraordinary challenges in their ght against hunger. The era o ‘the killing elds’ in Cambodia let an ater-math o decades o earand the implementation o treacherous coping mechanisms within households justin order to survive. Women, the rontline ghters in gaining access to ood or theiramilies, risked injuries rom mines while searching or wild oods and harvesting whatlittle they could grow. In the early years o this decade, these same women, through aprogramme run by Action Against Hunger, led a air selling their own produce andpassed on the methods they had learnt through giving classes in a demonstrationgarden and arm. For women who had eared speaking out in their own communities just a ew years earlier, this rst air was a very symbolic occasion. Women and Hunger  provides a collection o experiences rom Action Against Hun-ger’s work with women highlighting the extreme diculties and inequalities acing women throughout the world. It exemplies the oten unmanageable workload acedby women through time-consuming tasks o etching water, rewood, searching orsucient ood, taking care o the health o their amily and looking ater the home. The diculties o these tasks are oten exacerbated in times o confict as is the casein many o the countries in which Action Against Hunger works. Yet despite theburdens, the potentials o how women can become empowered provide encouragingstories. This hard-hitting evidence provides an overview o the challenges aced by womenand, particularly with the support o Action Against Hunger, o the success storiesthat are possible.Frances MasonTrustee Action Against Hunger UK
