  INTRODUCES  Climate change is one o the greatest challenges o our time. In responding to the imperative to reduce greenhouse gases, O-I eels astrong sense o responsibility—both as a global corporate citizen and asa business serving consumer goods producers. To this end, we recently establishedambitious environmental sustainability goals(see page 11). As a critical rst step towardachieving those goals, we undertook one o the rst complete lie cycle assessments inthe packaging sector. It is global in scope andencompasses every stage o the packaginglie cycle. LCA METHODS VARY WIDELY The indings rom our LCA helped to de-ne our sustainability program and oerunprecedented clarity or our customers.Because packaging LCA methods are widelyinconsistent, it is dicult to accurately andobjectively compare the carbon ootprint o dierent packaging materials.Simply put, in the absence o a completelie cycle analysis, customers and consumerssometimes see merely the tip o the prover-bial iceberg when it comes to a packagingmaterial’s true environmental prole.By providing a global and comparativeperspective, O-I’s LCA complements thelie cycle assessments recently conductedby the North American and Europeanglass container industries. It also acilitates“apples-to-apples” comparisons with otherconsumer goods packaging materials. SETTING A HIGHER STANDARD We expect that the complete LCA methodol-ogy used by our company and our industrywill establish a higher standard o clarity orconducting environmental impact assess-ments in the consumer goods packagingindustry. To that end, there are somebasic questions customers should ask theirpackaging suppliers to help determine whatis – and what is not – being refected in theirLCAs (see page 6).I invite you to learn more about ourLCA indings, as well as our sustainabilitygoals, in the pages that ollow. We viewour commitment to sustainability as oun-dational to our company and the pursuito our strategic priorities.Many opportunities remain in the eort toimprove sustainability in the packaging indus-try.
