  Today’s Objectives :Analyze the kinematics of a rigid body undergoing planartranslation or rotation about a fixed axis. PLANAR RIGID BODY MOTION: TRANSLATION & ROTATION  APPLICATIONS Passengers on this amusement ride are subjected to curvilineartranslation since the vehicle moves in a circular path but theyalways remains upright.Does each passenger feel the same acceleration?If the angular motion of the rotating arms is known, how canwe determine the velocity and acceleration experienced by thepassengers? Why would we want to know these values?    APPLICATIONS (continued)   Gears, pulleys and cams, whichrotate about fixed axes, are oftenused in machinery to generatemotion and transmit forces. Theangular motion of thesecomponents must be understoodto properly design the system.To do this design, we need to relate the angular motions of contacting bodies that rotate about different fixed axes. How isthis different than the analyses we did in earlier chapters?  RIGID BODY MOTION (Section 16.1)   We will now start to studyrigid body motion. The analysiswill be limited toplanar motion.For example, in the design of gears, cams, and links inmachinery or mechanisms, rotation of the body is animportant aspect in the analysis of motion.There are cases where an objectcannotbe treated as aparticle. In these cases thesizeorshapeof the body must be considered.Rotationof the body about its center of massrequires a different approach.
