Running Head: Mission Statements 1 Mission Statements Missing in Classrooms Sarah Harris Arizona State University SED 322 4/20/2018  Mission Statements Missing In the Classroom 2 Abstract A good mission statement has a set of core values with a clear purpose that connects the school community, external stakeholders (community leaders, staff members, students and their parents)  by providing an effective system of fundamental literacies, foundational knowledge, and creating 21st century thinkers of the world. It is the foundational development, focus of learning and stimuli that should be implemented it into the classroom. There are two types of stakeholders internal and external. The internal stakeholders consist of the administration, teachers, and staff. They work within the school on a daily basis and are the agents of change who can visualize the mission statement as a common ground for growth. A mission needs to be clear and precise delivering a statement of leadership, effective teaching, and the assurance of providing a safe and quality learning environment for all students. In order for a school to accomplish its mission, the infrastructure of the school needs to be specific in providing support for teachers, focusing on  professional development courses, team building skills, and pedagogical management techniques. Without these resources, the weaknesses in the mission begin to surface, and the infrastructure  begins to crumble.  Mission Statements Missing In the Classroom 3 Introduction Schools have been designed with a mission statements for hundreds of years that reflect a vision for student success. A good mission statement has a set of core values with a clear  purpose that connects the school community, external stakeholders (community leaders, staff members, students and their parents) by providing an effective system of fundamental literacies, foundational knowledge, and creating 21st century thinkers of the world. It is the foundational development, focus of learning and stimuli that should be implemented it into the classroom. The key elements of a mission statement are teacher commitment, student learning and community respect. In general it is a value system of an organization designed by an education community and policy makers. However, implementing these key elements into the classroom can be viewed as challenging. They are not provided a guideline or scale on how to measure and ensure that it is part of daily curricular activities in the classroom. It has to back by a strong leader someone who strives to see that the mission statement is internally being magnified into the classrooms of their school. A mission statement is a clarifying view of a purpose that is set to help leaders move the institution and guide potential organizational change. For a mission statement to be effective, it must have specific parameters for determining success of the school. The following mission statement is from a high school grades 9-12 in Chandler, Arizona; Serving a diverse population, is a comprehensive high school guided by the belief that all students can learn. Offering a variety of programs, nearly 200 courses, 22 interscholastic sports and 60 clubs, the school addresses the needs of all students and provides preparation for  postsecondary study and employment.  Mission Statements Missing In the Classroom 4 This mission statement is not only vague, but does not demonstrate a strong academic purpose for students. It clearly lacks a strong leadership backing and does not meet the need of every child. A mission statement should act like a mirror, clarifying for everyone where the school is, and where it’s going. And for that to happen, it has to be dynami c and organic. Changing endlessly responding to changing tones, values and social needs. (Heick, 2018) Principals need to lead a school with the perspective of how fast society is changing and what it will take to communicate these changes to teachers and improve student achievement. The relationship  between a principal and faculty has to be respectful, honest and work towards the same goals for success. Communication from teachers and parents and stakeholders will help identify how to facilitate and create a mission statement that is effective and promotes changes and growth of the school and students. Once they are identified they will need to work together through professional learning and collaboration practices. For example, Dewey (1998) argued that the primary education and schooling is not so much to prepare students to live a useful life, but to teach them how to live pragmatically and immediately in their current environment. Analyzing a way to incorporate a learning environment for their students that identifies these key elements of  practice will encourage student success and the development of skills that are preparing students for the future. Monthly or quarterly meetings are necessary to help measure the objectives of the mission’s pedagogi cal beliefs, goals and values are clearly reflected into the classroom. The Organization and the construction of consistent communication between principals and their faculty members and external stakeholders demonstrate belief in the schools mission statements.
